Frequently asked questions
When does CGST plus SGST apply instead of IGST?
CGST and SGST apply when the supplier and the place of supply are in the same state; the GST rate is split equally between the centre and the state. IGST applies to inter-state supplies and imports, charged at the full rate.
How do I remove GST from a total that already includes it?
Use Reverse GST. The base equals total x 100 / (100 + rate). For example a bill of 1,180 at 18% has a taxable value of 1,000 and GST of 180. Dividing by 1.18 rather than subtracting 18% is the common mistake.
Which income tax regime should I choose?
The tool computes both and names the cheaper one for your figures. The new regime has lower rates but almost no deductions, so it usually wins unless you claim substantial 80C, 80D, HRA and home-loan interest benefits.
Are the tax rates kept current automatically?
No, and that is deliberate: this tool never contacts a server. Slabs and rates are set out in an editable table so you can confirm and adjust them against the current Finance Act before relying on a figure.
Is this a substitute for professional advice?
No. It is an arithmetic aid for estimates and invoice checking. Statutory positions change, and surcharge, cess and special rates vary by case. Confirm anything material with your accountant.
Is GST & Tax Calculator free?
Yes. GST & Tax Calculator is free for everyone and needs no sign-up to use. An account is only needed to export, download or print, because every export is recorded.
Are my files uploaded to a server?
No. GST & Tax Calculator works inside your web browser, so the files you open are processed on your own device. If you sign in, the work you save (such as drafts and registers) is also kept in your account so it follows you to other devices.
Does it work on a phone?
Yes. It works in current versions of Chrome, Edge, Safari and Firefox on phones, tablets and computers, with nothing to install.
